Citizenship Classes
Becoming an American is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for many Africans, as well as the ticket to greater opportunities, travel and engagement in American civic life. These citizenship classes prepare African LPRs (Legal Permanent Residents) for the citizenship exam by introducing material that will be covered on the naturalization test, including US history and government, and by ensuring students have civics vocabulary in their arsenal. Since a level of English proficiency is necessary to pass the citizenship exam, these classes are meant for those Africans who already speak, read and write some English. Generally, classes hold about 20 to 25 students, and each course lasts for eight weeks. The class schedule will change every 8 weeks to accommodate as many student schedules as possible so check the calendar for an upcoming course that will work best for you. You must pre-enroll in this class by coming to the CAO offices during enrollment periods (check the calendar).
This class is FREE; ask about our free on-site babysitting options.
